A gas line rupture in southwest Baltimore forced neighbors to be evacuated and shut down several blocks for hours.
The strong smell of natural gas in the area triggered unsettling moments in the neighborhood.
“I had to actually put on my shirt and wrap it around my face to walk through,” said Philip Matthews.
Baltimore firefighters got the call just after 2 p.m. Wednesday. They say contractors were working on CSX train tracks when crews struck a large gas line near Edmondson Avenue and Rosedale Street.
Firefighters arrived and quickly evacuated about 20 people in the area.
“The evacuation was for precautionary reasons. It was a large gas line, so we really were uncertain what the possibilities could be or what could’ve happened,“ said Blair Skinner, a spokesperson with the Baltimore City Fire Department.

“I was scared because I didn’t know if my house was going to blow up,“ said Few.
