Students at Emma K. Doub Elementary in Hagerstown went home a little warmer on Monday morning, November 12, as firefighters from the Hagerstown Fire Department handed out out around 86 brand new warm winter coats.
"We as firefighters get to see the immediate result," said firefighter Craig Dofflemyer.
The coats include a "made especially for you tag" in a variety of styles and colors. The annual event is thanks to Operation Warm, a national nonprofit organization with the goal of giving back to children in need.
The coats will also be on reserve for immediate needs.
"Anyone that is displaced because of house fires, anybody that may be taken out of a home for whatever reason by law enforcement or other government agencies, we try to be of assistance as we can," said Dofflemyer.
Over the years, Operation Warm has given back to over two million children across the U.S.
"When we're driving to work and you catch a school bus stop, you see the kids with the coats on that are able to stay warm and that's really the reason we're doing it," said Dofflemyer.
In previous years, the Hagerstown Fire Department has delivered to Bester Elementary as well as Pangborn Elementary.
