Waterford Regional Fire Department officials are continuing to plan for the change coming to the department later this month when 39 federal grant-funded firefighters will be laid off.
This leaves the department, which covers Waterford, Pontiac and Lake Angelus, with approximately 100 employees.
Pontiac is guaranteed coverage of 13 people manning the city’s stations each day under a contract with the city.
Waterford contracted to provide Pontiac with fire services in February, 2012. Waterford has approximately 20 employees manning five stations each day, said Fire Chief John Lyman.
The department is considering “browning-out” the Williams Lake Road station in the township’s northwest sector.
“That means Williams Lake would be closed on one day, but open another,” said Lyman.
“It’s under discussion. Whether it’s open or not is dependent on manpower.”
The fire department has a $16 million budget, with three millages supporting the department.
