Members of the community, mostly children and their families, participated in a variety of safety and educational stations that were set up at the Muskegon Heights Fire Department. Muskegon Heights' annual Open House was held as part of Michigan's Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Oct. 4-10. There was a child identification program for parents to have their children fingerprinted in case of emergencies. Safe Kids Muskegon was present to inform families about home safety challenges and things you could do to keep the home environment safe beyond fire safety. The Muskegon Heights Police Department also used the opportunity to connect with the community and shed light on general public safety and awareness issues. The Red Cross also set up a station to hand out public safety literature to attendees. Muskegon Heights Fire Chief Christopher Dean wants the annual event to highlight fire safety and used the element of fun to bring that to the community. "It provides us with the opportunity to, (firstly), network with the community and give some more exposure to what we have been doing in the community as far as fire safety and fire safety information," Dean said.
