Firefighters in Mecosta County were able to save a home from a late-night fire.
Around 10:30 Tuesday night, crews responded to a call about a house fire on Bjornson Street in Big Rapids.
Firefighters say nobody was home at the time, but thanks to the call from a passerby, crews were able to get there quickly and put out the flames within a couple of hours.
Steve Schroeder, Deputy Director of the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety, tells us that despite some heat and smoke damage on the first floor, the home will be okay.
“The majority of the fire damage was contained to the room of origin, which was the living room. There's some smoke and heat damage throughout the first floor,” Schroeder explained. “At this point, our crew will be out here doing the investigation and attempt to determine the cause of the fire.”
He says an outcome like this is always a relief.
“Anytime we want the rapid response, we want the efficiency with the crews to get the fire extinguished and minimize the property damage,” he said.
Nobody was hurt in the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
