Last year in Kent County, overdose deaths reached 109. Authorities say 2016 could be on pace to surpass that grim figure, despite ramped-up efforts to help those hooked on heroin and other opiate-based drugs. "It has not improved at all," Kent County Undersheriff Michelle Young said about 911 calls for suspected overdoses. ... Mark Fankhauser, the Grand Rapids Fire Department emergency medical services coordinator, said firefighters have used 91 Narcan rescue kits this year. He said firefighters only began carrying Narcan slightly more than a year ago, along with Grand Rapids police.
