A Lawton home is a total loss following Sunday morning a fire apparently caused by a cast-iron wood stove. The Lawton Fire Department was called at 8:35 a.m. to a home in the 3100 block of 62nd Avenue in Van Buren County, said Lawton Fire Department Chief Eric Ramsey. Four people living in the home – all in the structure at the time of the fire – were able to leave the building on their own, Ramsey said. One of the individuals sought treatment at a hospital for smoke inhalation. "We did save a cat, and were able to get the cat out alive," Ramsey said. "It was turned back over to the home owners when they came out of it." The fire is believed to have come from a cast-iron wood stove that provided heat from the center of the home, Ramsey said. The Lawton Fire Department was assisted by the Paw Paw and Decatur fire departments. The fire was under control and the site cleared by 11:15, Ramsey said.
