Stovetop causes heavy smoke, three-alarm fire call at Portage apartment complex

A burning pot caused heavy black smoke and a three-alarm fire call at a Portage apartment complex Sunday morning, Feb. 7. No injuries were reported in the incident. The Portage Department of Public Safety's fire division was dispatched at 9:45 a.m. to Apartment 2D at Davis Creek Apartments and Flats, 5431 Meredith St. "The initial 9-1-1 caller reported a pot on the stove with flames showing," according to a statement released by Battalion Chief Richard Nason. "An on-call firefighter arrived three minutes later and reported heavy black smoke from the rear of a two story multi-family apartment complex." Second and third alarms were requested. Responders had the fire under control by 10:31 a.m., Nason said. The fire was contained to four apartments. Fire units remained at the scene of the fire by 11:30 a.m. Comstock, Oshtemo, Texas, Pride Care Ambulance, and the police division assisted on the scene. Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Pavilion, and South Kalamazoo County Fire Authority provided station staffing during the incident.
