A request by Memphis Fire Chief Justen Diaz to increase wages for members of the city’s volunteer fire department prompted budget concerns from city officials and a suggested compromise by members of the city’s fire committee. Diaz’ request came in the form of a letter handed out at a Feb. 2 city council meeting. The fire committee also received a budget analysis prepared by city council member Larry Wilson outlining the effect the increase would have on the city’s fire budget along with a comparison chart showing what other area departments pay. The fire committee, which includes council members Roberta Zukas, Scott Stoops and Jason Parker, met on Feb. 4 to discuss the matter. The committee’s recommendation to the city council will be smaller increases across the board, according to Zukas, chairwoman of the fire committee. She said the committee feels the increases are possible as long as an eye is kept on the budget. In fact, they put a stipulation in their recommendation that the fire budget be reviewed quarterly. In his letter, Diaz said members currently receive a flat rate of $15.30 each time they respond to a call; and it’s a one-time pay, not per hour. He requested an increase to $17. He also sought an increase in officer pay rates. The officers’ current annual wages are $1,133 for the chief, $849 for the assistant chief, $556 for the captain’s position and $283 for the lieutenant’s post. Diaz requested a $100 increase to each amount.
