The Plainfield Township Board has agreed to hire Steve McKeller, the township's interim fire chief, to be the new permanent fire chief.
The board voted unanimously on Monday, Oct. 17, to make the appointment.
McKeller has served as the township's interim fire chief since he replaced former Fire Chief Dave Peterson. Peterson abruptly retired this summer amidst ongoing discussions that he had violated township protocols.
When McKeller was promoted from assistant fire chief to interim fire chief in August Township Superintendent Cameron VanWyngarden said he expected to do a broad search for a new chief.
