The smoke from a large, five-acre fire reportedly was seen from as far away as downtown Muskegon.
Firefighters began working to put out the fire just before 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23, in the area of Benjamin and West River roads. It began as a relatively smaller fire as someone burned brush before the wind caught it, helping to expand it to to several acres, according to an official at the scene.
It was put out around 3:35 p.m.
Multiple crews -- including those from Dalton Township, Muskegon Township, North Muskegon, White Lake and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources -- responded.
A Michigan DNR plane also was called in to help but later was not needed.
No homes nor other property was damaged, the official said.
