An Eastpointe fire lieutenant who helped rescue two women from a burning house last year will receive a Medal of Valor from the Macomb County Fire Chiefs Association next week. Lt. Michael Hewelt, an 18-year member of the Eastpointe Fire Department, was the on-scene commander of a four-man team of firefighters who worked to remove the women from the burning home in January 2016. Both women died and three people were injured. The fire crew’s efforts to pull the victims from the home gave them at least a chance of surviving the incident, according to Deputy Fire Chief Lawrence Folkerts.
