Quick reaction from Detroit's firefighters and transportation employees prevented what could have been a catastrophic hit to the city's bus service from a fire at an east-side bus terminal during a cold, icy morning last week, Mayor Mike Duggan said Thursday.
Duggan heaped praise on nearly two dozen firefighters who responded to the fire at the Detroit Department of Transportation's Shoemaker Terminal early the morning of Jan. 13, and on DDOT workers who sprang into action to move buses out of the portion of the terminal where the fire started.
"What the DDOT employees and firefighters did was remarkable, and it means a great deal to the residents of Detroit every day," Duggan said at a news conference at the terminal, flanked by workers from both departments.
