Township residents will vote in August on a new tax to pay for police and fire services, with much of the money raised going toward a multi-million dollar pension debt for those departments.
The 1.483-mill tax proposed on the Aug. 8 ballot would cost someone with a home with a taxable value of $100,000 about $148 a year.
Meridian Township trustees approved the ballot language at a meeting Tuesday.
"We have two problems that we're trying to solve with this millage, and they're both related to police and fire," Township Supervisor Ron Styka said.
The 10-year tax would generate nearly $2.5 million in 2017. About $1.4 million of that would go towards police and fire pension debt; the other roughly $1 million would go toward fire and police equipment and personnel costs.
