Three fire departments were needed to extinguish a fire in a pile of shredded tires Wednesday morning at the Niagara, LLC., landfill off of Kimberly Road in Quinnesec.
Someone accidentally dumped hot material in the tire pile about 9:55 a.m., igniting the blaze, Breitung Township Fire Chief Jeff Iverson said.
Breitung firefighters weren’t concerned about the fire spreading, Iverson explained, as the pile was out in the middle of a field. However, they did request help from Norway and Niagara firefighters in providing extra water, Iverson said.
