Stepping into shoes and pulling up the fire-proof pants are all a part of the routine at the Ludington Fire Department for more than a century.
“The Ludington Fire Department was established in 1881,” said Gerry Funk, the chief.
One new member may be following that same routine, but she is making history.
“The first female on the Ludington Fire Department,” said Becky Cain
Becky Cain remembers her first call on the chilly December morning like it was yesterday.
“Your adrenaline starts going on what the situation is going to be like, how is the scene, who is going to be there,” she said. “Very shocking to me and it was real at that point and something I wanted to be a part of.”
“She’s come down with some of the other guys on her day off to come down here and practice,” said Funk.
Now it’s a routine she’s always ready for.
“We stop what we are doing it’s either sleeping or eating or family time,” said Cain.
