If you encounter a police officer in Ann Arbor, odds are that officer is going to be white and male. The same goes for Ann Arbor firefighters. Both the police and fire departments in Ann Arbor are now confronting the issue of diversity within their ranks. Leaders of both departments recently updated the City Council on new diversity recruitment plans and efforts underway. "We've done quite a bit of work with a number of personnel working on this," said Assistant Fire Chief Ellen Taylor, mentioning a 116-page research paper she authored last year and a diversity committee that's been formed within the Ann Arbor Fire Department.
