Fire trucks and rescue boats were on display outside of the Harsens Island Fire Station July 11 during the first of two Clay Township Fire Department open houses. Residents were invited to get an up-close look at the department's fire and rescue vehicles and speak with township and department leaders about the upcoming bond issue set to appear on the Aug. 7 ballot. Township Supervisor Artie Bryson and Fire Chief George Rose met with residents to discuss the condition of the department's current equipment and the planned upgrades. If approved, the bond would raise $2 million to replace and upgrade vehicles, equipment and facilities. The cost of the proposed millage increase is estimated at $33 per year for the owner of a home with a taxable value of $100,000.
