A woman and her eight grandchildren were left homeless Monday after a house fire in Reed City. Noxious fumes began to fill the air and smoke billowed from a second-floor bedroom window as firefighters from Reed City and Hersey Township responded shortly before 5 p.m. Monday to the home on Chestnut Street. While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, resident Debra Metcalf acknowledged that just prior to smelling smoke, several insect elimination canisters had been activated to address a bug infestation. The family and their pets safely evacuated the home shortly after the fire began.
