Several communities in St. Clair and Sanilac counties are asking voters to approve taxes to pay for fire and police protection.
Public protection taxes are on the ballot in Speaker and Moore townships and Deckerville in Sanilac County.
In St. Clair County, Berlin, Burtchville, Kenockee and Port Huron townships are pursuing fire taxes.
Speaker Township: The township's 1 mill fire protection tax expired on Dec. 31. Voters are being asked to renew it.
The tax would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $50 a year. It would be levied for four years through December 2021.
The tax would raise an estimated $37,106 during its first year.
The township has two fire stations with a roster of 31 firefighters and seven firefighting apparatus.
