A fire caused significant damage to the roof, attic and front of a Jackson home Thursday afternoon. Jackson Fire Capt. Todd Weaver said firefighters were dispatched at about 4:30 p.m. June 14 to a home in the 1100 block of S. Jackson Street. A woman and four children escaped the house safely and there were no injuries, Weaver said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said. Weaver described the attic of the house as "charred" and there was damage to the building's front. He said crews made "one heck of a stop" when the fire showed. "They did their job today," Weaver said. Jackson resident Steven Smith, 48, said he left his mother's home 10 minutes before he received a call of the fire. Smith said earlier in the day he was installing lightbulbs in the house's basement and they started flickering. He said he thinks an electrical issue could have contributed to the fire.
