After 18 years of service to the township, fire chief Eddie Mathis is leaving. “Those that probably know me best, know how difficult this was for me,” Mathis said Monday at the Raisin Township board meeting. “My entire life has been spent serving this community. ... And I made a lot of friends. There’s a lot of people who influenced my life and it’s because of this board and this community — that stands behind its fire department — is where I’m at today.” Mathis, who has served as the township’s fire chief for the last five years, recently was promoted to the rank of captain with the Adrian Fire Department, requiring more of his time. Mathis leaves the Raisin Township department Aug. 1. “I can’t thank not only this board but this community enough,” Mathis said. “I mean, they’ve given me a very, very, very rewarding career and I would not be where I’m at today with the city of Adrian if it wasn’t for this community. So thank you.”
