Families throughout Grand Traverse County have new fire alarms thanks to local fire departments. On Saturday, local fire departments went door-to-door in neighborhoods offering to check on smoke detectors and alarms. It was part of the new state-wide initiative announced by the state fire marshal on Tuesday. The goal was to ensure that everyone has a working smoke alarm in their home. Some homes required new alarms to be installed while others just needed new batteries. Fire departments in the Grand Traverse region aimed to install more than 300 alarms Saturday.
