Normally, firefighters have to rush out to crash scenes, but on Thursday, Nov. 15, the scene came to them.
Three Superior Township firefighters were in their station at 7999 Ford Road when shortly after 1:30 p.m., they heard a crash outside, said Fire Chief Victor Chevrette.
A two-vehicle collision in the area of Ford and Prospect roads left a septic truck on their front lawn, Chevrette said.
In the intersection, a woman was trapped in her van, seriously injured.
"It was a little hectic," Chevrette said. "... they triaged and started calling for mutual aid." With firefighters talking to her all the while, crews tore into the top of the van and removed the ceiling in order to reach and rescue the woman, freeing her from the vehicle within 37 minutes, Chevrette said.
And though she was reported to be in critical condition, Chevrette said the quick response - right outside their door - likely aided in getting the woman to the hospital within the "golden hour," believed to reduce the outcomes of injuries.
