Two dead in Grand Rapids adult foster care home fire

Two people have died in an overnight fire at a Northwest Grand Rapids adult foster care home, fire officials said. The victims are two men, ages 18 and 62. Fire crews responded just after 1 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 to 1018 Widdicomb St. NW for the fire. Grand Rapids Fire Chief John Lehman said firefighters arrived fo find heavy flame showing from the front of house, a two-and-a-half story home He said 14 people were inside the house when the fire started and most were able to get out. Lehman said firefighters used a ladder to access a back bedroom on the second floor and pull the 18-year-old male out. He was taken to a hospital and later died. The 62-year-old also was found in a second-floor bedroom and taken down the front stairs by firefighters. Rescuers tried to revive him at the scene but could not. Lehman said authorities later learned that a third person was taken to Mercy Health St. Mary's Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
