A group of firefighters in Cheboygan County is pushing a safety message by offering to install new smoke detectors in your home free of charge.
The Iverness Fire Department received a shipment of 108 detectors through the State Fire Marshal's Community Risk Reduction Program.
"Smoke alarms need to be in every bedroom, outside of every bedroom and on every level of your home," explained Rob Socha, Iverness Township Firefighter.
With the detectors, firefighters hope to reverse the number of fire deaths in Michigan, which hit 135 last year according to the Fire Marshal.
Along with the smoke detectors, the department also has fire safety cards available to help families with creating a life-saving plan.
