A cooking fire that spread through a Comstock home and garage Monday afternoon killed a dog and left a family displaced.
The Comstock Department of Fire and Rescue responded to a fire call at a house on Docsa Street around 11:57 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14. When first responders arrived, residents had vacated the home and heavy smoke was seen coming out the front door, according to a news release from the fire department.
The smoke quickly turned to heavy fire, according to the release. Firefighters extinguished the fire and began a search for a family dog. The dog was found, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, the release said.
The home had working smoke alarms and the fire was determined to be a cooking fire.
Fire Chief Matthew Beauchamp said the fire spread from the kitchen and caused extensive damage to every room other than one bedroom with a closed door. The fire also spread to the home’s garage, damaging a car inside.
