Spring Lake-area homeowners may want to contact their insurance carriers to see if they qualify for lower rates. The Spring Lake Fire Department learned this week that it has received the Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating of Class 4, an improvement from its previous Class 5 rating.
The new rating, which goes into effect April 1, puts the village and township in the Top 15 percent statewide with a Class 4 rating or below.
ISO ratings are determined by evaluating a municipality's water supply, emergency communications 911 system, fire department and community risk reduction programs. The ratings are calculated on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the best and 10 signifying minimal fire protection.
Spring Lake Township joins the City of Grand Haven, which jumped to a 4 from a 5 rating in 2018. Ferrysburg is rated a 5.
