A 47-year-old man died in St. Paul early Wednesday after being struck by a train, according to officials. It happened at about 4 a.m., as a person was walking on the railroad tracks and not at a road crossing, said Amy Mcbeth, BNSF Railway spokeswoman. St. Paul firefighters and police officers were called to the collision in the area of Point Douglas Road and Springside Drive, which is south of Lower Afton Road. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. The train engineer and conductor told officers the train was heading north, coming into the train yard, when they noticed a male standing in the center of the tracks ahead, according to Steve Linders, a St. Paul police spokesman. The workers reported “the male appeared to notice the train as it approached and he attempted to back away from the tracks to the west, but was not able to clear the area before being struck by the train,” Linders said.
