A Lee County firefighter was arrested because he is accused of driving a fire truck while drunk and getting into an accident while responding to a fire. He is identified by the Lee County Sheriff's Department as 34-year-old Phillip W. Gasaway, a member of the Unity Fellowship Volunteer Fire Department. Sheriff Jim Johnson says Gasaway was heading to a grass fire before 7:30 p.m. Thursday when he lost control of the fire truck, which ran off of County Road 811. Gasaway is charged with driving under the influence. The firefighter said Thursday night he did have alcohol in his system but the fire truck left the road to avoid causing an accident with an oncoming car. Gasaway says his court appearance on the DUI charge is scheduled for April 16.
