The cost of fighting Montana's fires increase every day. Montana's firefighting fund will run out by the end of this week. That means the state will have to tap into emergency reserves to continue to battle fires. The state is not alone however, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation says their funds will deplete by the end of next week as well. The DNRC and the state budgeting office have separate funds for fighting fires. In total, more than $168 million in federal money has gone into battling wildfires this season. At the beginning of the fiscal year, the state had a firefighting fund of $62 million. Statewide budget cuts reduced it by half when state revenues came in lower than expected. Montana DNRC says they have spent $29.5 million on fighting fires. DNRC communications director John Grassy tells us their funding issue will not slow down firefighting efforts. He says there are other funds they can tap into.
