A grass fire between the Ulm Frontage Road and Interstate 15 on Sunday afternoon was caused by an old car muffler that had fallen off of a vehicle. According to Ulm Volunteer Fire Chief Karsten Hovland, the department received the call just after 4 p.m. The fire charred about six acres and threatened two structures coming within 30 to 40 feet of the houses. Hovland said the windy conditions made it difficult for fire crews to contain the fire, which took around 45 minutes. A flare-up was spotted in the area around 8 p.m. but firefighters quickly extinguished it. Property owners Mike and Amber Pearson were thankful for the quick response to the fire, which was right behind their home. "We just want to give our appreciation to each and every person," Mike Pearson said. "We can never be grateful enough for what they did."
