Butte police have determined that a blaze that caused a woman to catch fire Monday afternoon behind the Galena Street post office was accidental.
That’s according to Undersheriff George Skuletich, who said Wednesday that police now believe foul play was not involved.
Police and firefighters were dispatched to the post office around 4:30 p.m. Monday.
A witness at the scene told officers that the victim, a 49-year-old homeless woman, inadvertently caught herself on fire after lighting twigs and rubbish to stay warm. The woman, who Skuletich said appeared to be intoxicated, said someone may have set her on fire.
