Western Montana hazmat and fire crews are just finishing up important training on how to put out a chemical leak at REC Silicon in Butte. Alarms were blaring at the facility Thursday morning just like they would normally be doing if there was a chemical spill. This time it was only a drill. Butte-Silver Bow's Fire Department, Missoula Regional and Rocky Mountain Labs hazmat teams, and REC Silicons emergency response squads were participating in the training. All crews were on scene in Level A hazmat suits simulating what to do during a silicon tetrachloride leak . Chemical leaks are something REC Silicon Senior Vice President Kurt Levens said could happen at any processing facility. He says Montana has a few of them, including petrochemical companies in Billings.
