As dangerous wildland fires spread across western Wyoming, the Bacon Rind fire just north of West Yellowstone continues to smolder.
The fire, which has resulted in the closure of some Yellowstone National Park backcountry camping areas, won't likely be doused "until several days of significant precipitation, including snow, blankets the fire," according to a Forest Service press release.
The fire started on July 20, the result of a lightning strike. Since then it's burned across more than 7 square miles, of which about 2½ square miles are in Yellowstone Park.
The blaze is located roughly 20 miles south of Big Sky and 23 miles north of West Yellowstone. The Bacon Rind fire has burned close to Highway 191, resulting in temporary closures of the route.
Drivers are advised to slow down and drive defensibly in the region. The speed limit through the fire area is 45 mph.
