A 14-year-old boy was rescued from a house fire just after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Firefighters confirm the boy was home alone when the fire started.
Greensboro firefighters said smoke was coming out of the roof when they arrived at the home in the 3600 block of Country Ridge Road. According to investigators on scene, a neighbor told firefighters they thought someone might be inside the home. Firefighters had to break into the locked home and crawl because the smoke was so thick.
Investigators say firefighters found the boy semi-conscious, lying on the floor in a bedroom, and dragged him out. The mother said the boy was eating breakfast at the kitchen table when she left to take a younger child to elementary school, and the father had already left for work, according to investigators.
The boy was taken to Cone Health Center but has since been transported to Baptist Medical Center. He does not have any burns, but is being treated for smoke inhalation.
Battalion Chief Brandan Weaver says the home is being treated like a crime scene while the cause of the fire is determined.
Investigators say at least six people live at the home.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family with a place to stay.
