(VIDEO) Firefighters are trying to confirm the identity of a body they found after a fire in Greensboro this afternoon.
Greensboro Fire Division Chief Kenny Stanley said firefighters know who lives at the home, but are not certain that person is the same person found in the fire. They also don't know if the fire was the victim's cause of death.
Firefighters responded at about 2:55 p.m. to reports of a fire at 112 S. Holden Road, dispatchers said.
When they arrived, they found fire and smoke coming from the home. Emergency personnel temporarily closed South Holden Road while they battled the blaze.
One person died at the scene, firefighters said.
“This was an elderly person,” Stanley said. “We don’t know the cause of death at this time.”
Investigators hope an autopsy will determine the identity of the body and the cause of death, he said.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation tonight.
