A woman and her 2-year-old son are safe after a dryer caught fire inside their unit at the Leafcrest Apartments in south Charlotte early Monday morning. The fire happened around 5:30 a.m. off Archdale Drive. The woman said her smoke detector woke them up to the fire. She said she hasn't run the dryer since last week. The Charlotte Fire Department is investigating how the fire started. Firefighters on scene said the woman and her son won't be able to get back into unit right now because of fire and water damage. Other tenants who were evacuated were able to return to their apartment units before 7 a.m. Firefighters brought the dryer out onto the front walkway along with other debris from inside.
