The High Point Fire Department is among the best in the nation, and state officials visited the Triad on Tuesday to mark the accomplishment. Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Wayne Goodwin at a ceremony on Tuesday presented Fire Chief Tommy Reid with a plaque recognizing the department’s achievement and commending its efforts in providing exemplary protection to the residents of High Point. Each fire department in the country is assigned a rating from 1 to 10, with a Class 1 rating being the best. The ratings are based on the department’s operations, water supply and distribution, emergency communications, and efforts to prevent and reduce fire risks. “Fire is everyone’s fight, and our communities are safer places because of the work of the firefighters here today and all across North Carolina,” Goodwin said during a ceremony at Greensboro Fire Station No. 11. “I commend you all for demonstrating a stellar commitment to protecting lives. Because of that commitment, residents and business owners alike can count on superior fire service and reduced fire loss.” Greensboro Interim Fire Chief Bobby Nugent also was presented with a plaque recognizing the department’s Class 1 rating. Out of about 49,000 communities across the country, a mere 132 have achieved a Class 1 rating. Five of those communities are in North Carolina, with two located in the Triad.
