Firefighters with the Lexington and Thomasville fire departments are presenting the message of fire safety this week as part of National Fire Prevention Week. Personnel from each of the departments are visiting various schools in their respective cities. National Fire Prevention Week runs from Sunday through Saturday, with fire safety events planned by each of the Lexington and Thomasville fire departments. The theme for National Fire Prevention Week is “Hear the beep where you sleep, every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.” Thomasville Fire Department will have Safety Fest 2015 from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Thomasville Funeral Home, 18 Randolph St. There will be a boy's and girl’s bike raffle at 6:30 p.m. The winner must be present. The event includes food and drinks while supplies last and emergency vehicles on display. Among the activities will be an inflatable fire safety house. Lexington Fire Department will hold host a similar event from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at its headquarters on 200 E. Center St. There will be a bounce house, a fire safety house, station tours, a fire safety movie, crafts and games, a fire extinguisher simulator and an emergency simulator. There also will be food. Andy Beck, fire commander for the Lexington Fire Department, said between 100-200 people usually attend the LFD’s fire safety day. The week of school visits by Lexington firefighters culminates with Saturday’s event, he said. Beck joined a number of firefighters Monday at South Lexington Elementary School. That’s where they discussed fire safety with students.
