A large brush fire kept Kannapolis area firefighters busy on Wednesday afternoon. Just before 3:00 pm the Kannapolis Fire Department responded to a call for smoke in the area in the 1700 block of Concord Lake Road. The first firefighters on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the woods. As crews accessed the area they discovered a large brush fire burning approximately 5 acres. Additional resources from KFD as well as Cold Water and Mount Mitchell Volunteer Fire Departments were brought to the scene for assistance. Personnel from the NC Forestry Service also responded to the scene utilizing their bulldozer due to the amount of fire. The fire was brought under control in approximately one hour. KFD crews remained on the scene with the Forestry Service checking for hot spots and cutting a fire line around the area. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.
