A fire early Saturday morning destroyed a seafood business warehouse on Gallants Channel.
Multiple county fire departments with tankers and ladder trucks were toned out at 4:19 a.m. to 477 Old Causeway Road where a fire raged at Beaufort Inlet Seafood. The business is owned by Brent Fulcher.
According to County Fire Marshal Eddie Lewis, firefighters who were first on scene said flames were coming through the roof in an area above a 50-foot by 50-foot freezer storage site. The fire marshal said he has determined that area was the origin of the fire, but the cause is still under investigation. The business is insured.
Mr. Lewis said the departments did an outstanding job responding to the fire, considering there are no fire hydrants in the area. The site is on the Beaufort-Morehead City causeway, which is outside of the neighboring Beaufort and Morehead City limits.
“The tide was low too and crews had difficulty trying to draft water from the creek (Gallants Channel),” he said. “So, they called for additional resources with tankers to assist.”
