Sixteen people, including six kids, are now homeless after their home and belongings were destroyed in a fire.
It happened Tuesday at 3:30 a.m. along Walnut Drive in Swain County.
The Swain County fire marshal says the cause is undetermined, but they have not ruled out arson.
Constance Grant and her husband were sleeping in the barn where the fire started. That barn was connected to a trailer.
"If my husband hadn't been awake and woke me up and smelled it, we would have burned alive and so would everybody else," Grant said.
Grant and her husband both suffered first-degree burns trying to salvage what they could and wake up everyone else.
"It was either get our stuff out and (the dog) out or come and warn everybody else. That's how little time we had. That fire spread in less than 10 minutes," Grant said.
