Crews from at least five fire departments battled a fire Sunday morning south of Hickory. The fire started inside a business converted into several apartments on Mitchell Drive. One resident said he heard a popping noise coming from one of the breakers prior to the fire. The flames reached the roof, causing it to sag. The Mountain View fire chief said everyone made it out. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the residents. Neighbors said that in the 1960s and 70s, the apartment building housed Mountain View Produce, a grocery store just outside the Brookford town limits.
