Co-workers try to save man after falling into Catawba River, drowning

Hickory firefighters responded to an overnight drowning on Tuesday. Firefighters were called out to the 4800 North Center Street (127 bridge over the Catawba River/Lake Hickory between Catawba and Alexander County) around 1:50 a.m. When firefighters arrived they were told that an employee with Astron General Contracting was working on the 127 bridge and fell into the water. A co-worker told FOX 46 Charlotte the man who fell into the water was 28-year-old Filigonio Perez Bravo from Guatemala. Additional employees jumped in after Bravo, but were not able to save him. Emergency personnel confirmed that Bravo drowned. Various agencies responded to help: Hickory Fire Department, Catawba County Ems, Bethlehem Fire, Alexander, Rescue Squad, Lovelady Rescue, Catawba County Emergency Management, Alexander County Emergency Management, Hickory Police Dept, Catawba County Sheriff’s Department, Wildlife, Sherrill’s Ford Fire & Rescue, Red Cross. Water rescue equipment responded to assist with location of the victim and emergency personnel have requested additional specialized equipment and sonars to respond to the scene.
