Firefighters temporarily vacated Station 43 in Kernersville on Thursday as officials waited for a report on possible mold in the building, but town leaders say that fire crews moved back in the next day and that the building is safe to occupy. Curtis Swisher, Kernersville’s town manager, wrote in an email Tuesday: “We moved the firemen out Thursday night and back in Friday when we got the report back. “There is a trace of mold in one of the rooms and mold in another room. It is not airborne and the rest of the building is safe to occupy. We will start remediation efforts this week hopefully.” The department called in a testing firm last week after discovering a possible spot of mold in a room in the station off West Mountain Street. Chris Langham, Kernersville’s fire chief, said that the station’s firefighters spent Thursday night at the nearest station, about 3 miles away on West Bodenhamer Street, as a precaution. Langham said the mold strain that was discovered is not the kind that people call black mold. He said the two affected dorm rooms have been sealed off, and a firm will return to complete remediation.
