The Durham Fire Department said to be cautious after it has received reports of fraudulent fundraising phone calls. Deputy Fire Chief Chris Iannuzzi said the Department never makes phones calls to solicit support from the public. “It’s unfortunate that someone would try to compromise the community’s trust for public servants,” said Iannuzzi. “It’s important that residents know that we will never ask for money over the phone.” He said fundraisers like “Fill the Boot” are widely advertised by the Department. “Anything else is likely a scam,” Iannuzzi said. Officials said to research any organization before you donate.
