Fires claim the lives of thousands of people each year across the country. Aside from having a working smoke detector, firefighters also said you should have an evacuation route planned with your family.
Lt. Tobby Wainwright with Washington Fire said often times they encounter people that don’t have a plan. He said it could make all the difference between life and death.
“You also need an approved designated meeting point that way if they do have an emergency, everybody can get to a safe place and be accounted for,” said Wainwright, who added that most people will choose the door they enter and exit the home most as a primary route.
However, regardless of what you decide, your evacuation route should be clear of any objects, like shoes and couches.
For some parents, evacuation plans haven’t been something they addressed yet.
