The mother of a Surry County woman who killed herself is suing a convicted sex offender and emergency medical technician in her daughter's suicide. Dawn Wood says Michael Bryan and Rhonda Cochran could have saved her daughter's life if they had immediately contacted authorities when they learned she was suicidal while they were on the phone with her two years ago. She filed a wrongful death lawsuit March 30, saying the Cochrans were trained as members of the rural State Road Volunteer Fire Department to call authorities immediately if someone threatens suicide. She also accuses emergency management and fire department officials of backing EMT certification for Michael Bryan Cochran despite knowing he was a convicted sex offender.
