A wildfire burning in Jackson County near Sylva has now grown to between 300 to 400 acres. Kelly Cagle with the U.S. Forest Service spoke with News 13 overnight. He said the fire is not entirely contained, but that portions of it are contained. Dozens of firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, the North Carolina Forest Service, Emergency Management from Jackson County and the Bureau of Land Management Lakeview, Oregon, have been called in to help relieve the local firefighters. Cagle said on Wednesday, crews plan to conduct burn out operations in the areas of the fire line that have not been burned out. A burn out operation means crews will set controlled fires around the fire line. Then the wildfire will not have any fuel once it reaches those areas that have been burned out.
